Focal Plain Chant

Have you purchased good-quality speakers and you're a bit disappointed? They sound a bit rough, a little harsh? We might have the answer. Focal, the French speaker manufacturer, produce sound-absorbing pads which fit directly behind the speakers. They absorb the sound from the rear of the speakers. This stops acoustic cancellation and distortions caused by standing waves and reflected sound.

Another use: apply Plain Chant inside your subwoofer enclosure. This creates an anechoic chamber. The resulting improvement in the impact and clarity of your bass is spectacular. You'll also get better SPL because the driver is not being battered by reflected sound within the sub box. The effect of Plain Chant not matched by any other product on the market. There are lots of copies, but Plain Chant just works better.

Soundoff Classic

Soundoff Classic is a sound-deadening product along the same lines as Dynamat, Roadkill and Brown Bread. It deadens resonance in car doors and body panels. We recommend it above other brands for two reasons. It is easy to work with; it's flexible, so can form into the compound curves inside door panels. It works extremely well as a sound-deadening product, in direct comparison testing with all the other brands. At $99 per square meter, it is economically priced, so you can afford to use it quite extensively throughout the car to kill off rattles and vibrations caused by road noise and to remove panel buzzes caused by your car speakers.

Soundoff Barrier Mat

Install Barrier Mat under your vehicle's carpet to reduce road and exhaust noise. It fits under the carpet but above the underlay. Fitting tip: warm it with a heat-gun to make it conform to the floor pan shape. For best effect you will need wall-to-wall coverage. Cover the entire flor pan, from door sill right across to the opposite sill, and from the firewall to the boot area. It's not easy to install, but the results are worth it. You'll reduce road and tyre noise by around half. That sporty exhaust becomes a quiet burble instead of an intrusive roar. Tyre noise and engine noise are reduced to a quiet buzz. Best of all, your stereo will sound magnificent when it doesn't have competing noise!

Optimising your speaker system

For good sound quality and dynamic impact, remember to use speakers of the same brand front and rear. This is not a sales pitch, it's a scientific fact. If you use Focal Polyglass in the front of your car, use Focal Polyglass in the back. Alpine Type R speakers in the front? You should use Alpine Type R in the back!

Subwoofers can mix and match as you wish, but mixed brands of cabin speaker is a no-no!

The reasons are to do with the crossovers and the cone materials. The capacitors and inductors in crossovers assign delay to the audio signal passing through. If you have different components in line with the front speakers as compared to the back speakers, the audio signals will be out-of-phase. This results in 'null' frequencies, where the speakers outputs cancel each other.

Different cone materials have different response characteristics. Lighter cones move quickly when given a signal, heavier cones are slower.

If you use the same type of speakers all round, they will be in-phase at all frequencies. They will sound clearer and more dynamic.
